For many companies, recruiting highly educated technology graduates is a major challenge. They need people and knowledge to successfully manage the digital revolution in the manufacturing industry. Hence the importance to generate enthusiasm among young children for technology and sciences, or STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics). Considering our role as innovation accelerator in the manufacturing industry, it was for us an obvious choice to set up a cooperation project with the 6 Flemish FabLabs.
Between 2015 and 2017, we invested 180,000 euro to enable these FabLabs to visit schools and set up special workshops for 10 to 14 year olds. At that age, young people make important choices about their studies and thanks to the workshops we can let them discover sciences and technology in an approachable manner. By cooperating with schools, we also reach target groups that are traditionally less likely to think about a career in science, such as girls and minority groups. In all, we set up about 300 workshops and reached about 3500 children and their teachers.
